FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

14TH ANNUAL TRAVERSE CITY FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE VOTE FOR OPEN SPACE MOVIES, AND ANNUAL BUMPER CONTEST WITH CASH PRIZES

TRAVERSE CITY, MI, May 30, 2018 – Now in its 14th year, the world-renowned Traverse City Film Festival will return to downtown Traverse City from July 31 – August 5. Academy Award-winning filmmaker and festival president and programmer Michael Moore founded the festival in 2005 with the belief that One Great Movie Can Change You.

THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE MOVIE IN THE OPEN SPACE OUTDOOR CINEMA

One of the most popular events of the festival is always the annual People’s Choice Night at the Open Space Park on Grand Traverse Bay, and once again we have opened voting to the public so that YOU can decide what will play on our giant 65-foot inflatable screen set against the gorgeous Traverse City bayfront on the evening of Friday, August 3. This year we’re inviting people to choose from a list of returning all-time Open Space favorites including: “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Ghostbusters” (1984), “A League of Their Own,” Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Click here to vote by Friday, June 8.

The festival’s gift to the community, the People’s Choice winner and other magical family films will show nightly at the Open Space Park right on the bay, for FREE, from Tuesday, July 31 through Sunday, August 5 at dusk (approximately 9:30 p.m.). Music, food, entertainment, and fun begins at 7:00 p.m. each night. The People’s Choice winner, and the full lineup of Open Space films will be announced on June 29. As always, these beloved free-for-the-entire-community events remain possible thanks to the generosity of our sponsors. Learn more about sponsoring here.

2018 BUMPER CONTEST

Unlike other festivals and theaters, we don’t run ads before our screenings. Instead we treat our audiences to the incredible creativity and storytelling prowess of our Bumper Contest winners. Bumpers are 20-to-60-second short films designed to play before festival feature presentations, and we’re looking for you to share your talents by making creative shorts that capture the spirit of the festival and Traverse City. And thanks to our Sustaining Sponsor FIM Group, there’s even a top cash prize of $1,000!

So get out there and get going! Everyone can’t wait to see what you come up with. Entries are due by Monday, July 9, and viewing links can be submitted by email to bumpers@tcff.org. For more info, recommendations, fine print, and a look at last year’s winners, visit our

ABOUT TCFF

TCFF was founded in 2005 by Academy Award-winning director Michael Moore. He and fellow native Michiganders producer Rod Birleson, actor Jeff Daniels, entertainment executive Penny Milliken, and actress Christine Lahti serve on the organization’s Board of Directors. Other board members include Oscar nominee Tia Lessin, Oscar winner Terry George, Emmy winner Larry Charles, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, and acclaimed filmmaker Mark Cousins.

TCFF is a charitable, educational, nonprofit organization committed to celebrating the art and power of cinema. We believe “One Great Movie Can Change You.” The festival brings films and filmmakers from around the world to Northern Michigan for the annual summer event, now one of the largest in the country.

The organization led the preservation and restoration of the historic State Theatre in Downtown Traverse City, which it continues to own and operate as a year-round, community-based, volunteer-staffed art house. The festival later expanded to renovate a WPA building from the FDR era and turn it into a sister screen for the State Theatre — the Bijou by the Bay. Both venues combine world-class state-of-the-art presentation with classic hometown movie palace experiences.
