You’re not going to miss the movies we’re showing this year, especially some of Michael’s top under the radar picks:

I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO
The great director Raoul Peck will join us at this year’s festival for screenings of not one, but two of his brilliant films — and I hope you will not miss either one. Start with one of my very favorite films of the year, and one of the most essential: Peck’s impeccable look at the work of activist and author James Baldwin, and at our country.

THE YOUNG KARL MARX
Peck’s other film at TCFF 2017 is a fascinating look at the lives of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels as they forged a friendship and a body of work that did no less than change the world.

WAR MACHINE
If you like your comedy blacker than black, you won’t want to miss this “Dr. Strangelove”-style look at the war in Afghanistan starring Brad Pitt.

CITY OF GHOSTS
If you see just one thing about Syria this year, make it this definitive Syria documentary about brave citizen journalists who are revealing the everyday horror of living under ISIS, at great personal risk to themselves and their families. You’ll never look at life in the same way. Part of the Travel Ban series.

LONG STRANGE TRIP
Director Amir Bar-Lev will join us in person for a special pre-Opening Night screening of his latest triumph, an epic look at the Grateful Dead that is captivating not only for Deadheads, but anyone who loves rock, history, or just sublimely made docs. It plays the State on Tuesday, July 25 at 11 am.

THE HANDMAIDEN
A Hitchcockian-caliber thriller and an exquisite work of artistic expression, there’s nothing else like “The Handmaiden” at this festival.

JUNCTION 48
This film’s lead actress will be in TC to present this musical, thought-provoking crowd-pleaser about Palestinian youth in a predominantly Israeli rap scene, from director Udi Aloni.

500 YEARS
Our friends Pamela Yates and Paco de Onis are doing some of the most important documentary work out there right now, and we are excited to welcome them back to TC with their latest, an inspiring film that bears witness to the profound stories of the indigenous communities of Guatemala.

THE CHOCOLATE CASE
Up against a billion-dollar industry, the search for truth in “The Chocolate Case” is eye-opening, galvanizing, and seriously entertaining. Destined to be one of the hits of this year’s festival, and not just because tickets come with chocolate.

SPEEDY
The best in the world at accompanying silent film, the Alloy Orchestra, returns to TC this summer for what might be their most exciting screening yet, as they score the antics of great silent comedian Harold Lloyd in his hilarious and exuberant love letter to the Big Apple.
