All dressed up and nowhere to go?
In honor of its fifth anniversary, the Traverse City Film Festival is holding a 5k Costume Race on Saturday, August 1, preceded by the Stars of the Mile, an invitation-only race for elite runners.
“There’s a race out in California called The Breakers where participants dress up in the wildest, craziest, zaniest costumes they can,” said Doug Peterson, race coordinator. “We thought we could tie that idea into the film festival because we can suggest people dress up in costumes, whether it’s their favorite actor or actress, or whatever they might like to do, and they will be able to finish in front of the State Theatre on the red carpet.
“We’ve heard from a lot of people that they are planning to dress up in these crazy outfits. It will be as fun for the spectators as it will be for the participants.”
The by-invitation-only Stars of the Mile race is first, starting near the State Theatre downtown. It will feature eight female and eight male elite runners competing for cash prizes. The women’s race will begin at 7:30, with the men’s race to follow at 7:45 pm. The course, exactly one mile, is a loop running from Front to Union, Union to State, State to Boardman, and ending back on Front.
“Bryan Burns and Eric Houghton of the Traverse City Track Club board have been looking for a chance to bring a downtown mile race back to Traverse City,” said Peterson. “(Film festival Founder) Michael Moore agreed, and we’re basically going to do a loop downtown, on this crazy busy Saturday night of the film festival.”
Immediately following the mile race, spectators competing in the 5K costume race will be bused to the Elm parking lot on the NMC campus where the race is slated to go off at 8 pm. From the Elm parking lot, 5k runners will proceed out of the south entrance and head toward Grandview Parkway. They will take the TART trail into the downtown marina and continue into Open Space. They will then proceed through the old zoo area and tunnel under Grandview Parkway, leading them to Front Street and toward the red carpet finish at the State Theatre.
As part of the festival’s new Filmmaker Party at Wade Trim, which runs from 7:30 to 11:30 pm on Saturday night outdoors at the corner of Park and State, Comedian Jeff Garlin (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) will judge the racers’ costumes, and prizes will be given out between 8:30 and 9 pm. The Best Costume winner will receive two round trip tickets to anywhere in the continental US courtesy of Altour. Race participants can enter the party with a special wrist band until the costume judging is over, and if they’d like to stay to enjoy the complimentary food and drink, they can buy a party ticket for 50 percent off the normal cost of $25.
“We think this is going to turn out to be a really cool, fun kind of signature event,” Peterson said.
Pre-registration is $20 per person or $60 for a family (up to 4 people). Race day registration is $25 per person and $75 per family. There is no cost for children in strollers.
