TC Film Festival Announces Opening, Closing Night Films For '07 Festival

Sundance Winner, French Period Film to Kick off, Wrap Up Festival; Free Outdoor Movies Lineup Released

Traverse City, Mich. (July 6, 2007) - A Sundance Audience-Award winner and an acclaimed French costume drama will be the opening and closing night films at this year's Traverse City Film Festival, festival director Michael Moore announced today.

"Once," the surprise smash hit of this year's Sundance Film Festival, will kick off the 2007 TC festival on Tuesday, July 31. The intimate modern-day musical follows a street musician and an immigrant as they meet, fall in love, and begin chronicling their affair through music.

"It's possibly the best film I've seen this year," said Moore. "It's original, upbeat and very uplifting."

The festival will close on Sunday, Aug. 5, with the new French film "Moliére," a bold reimagining of the life of famed French playwright Jean-Baptiste Poquelin Moliére. The lush period piece has been garnering rave reviews among critics for its masterful balance of suspense, humor, romance and history.

Free movies playing on the giant, inflatable screen in the Open Space each night are "E.T." on Wednesday, Aug. 1; "North by Northwest" on Thursday, Aug. 2; "Grease" on Friday, Aug. 3; and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" on Saturday, Aug 4. Any film rained out during the week will be rescheduled for Sunday, Aug. 5.

The rest of this year's lineup, including a complete list of screenings and panels, will be announced on Thursday, July 12. Tickets go on sale to members of the Friends of the Festival at noon on Friday, July 13, then to the general public one week later. Public tickets are limited to walk-ups only from noon until 6 p.m. on July 20. After that, they'll be available for online and phone purchases, as well as through the box office daily from 12-8 p.m.

All tickets to regular film screenings are $8.50, except for the opening and closing night movies, which are $25. Open Space movies and panels are free, as is the children's screening for people under 18. Tickets for the opening and closing night parties are sold separately and are $50 each. All tickets can be purchased at the Main Box Office at 300 E. Front St. in Radio Center (next to Crema), downtown Traverse City, by phone at 231-922-0234, or online at www.traversecityfilmfest.org.
